If you don’t speak Korean, can you still travel around Korea?

Yes, you can.

You don’t need to speak Korean to enjoy a trip to South Korea. Many travelers visit Korea knowing only a few Korean words, and they still have a great time.

I know this can feel a little scary before your first trip.

You may wonder:

“Will I be able to use the subway?”

“What if no one speaks English?”

“How will I order food?”

“What if I need help?”

Don’t worry too much. You can travel in Korea with very little Korean.

But there are a few things I recommend preparing before you come.

You Can Travel in Korea Without Speaking Korean

In Seoul, you can get around with very little Korean.

Many signs at airports, subway stations, and popular tourist areas have English information. You will also find restaurants with pictures on the menu, English menus, or self-service kiosks.

You may sometimes have trouble communicating with someone.

But this does not mean your trip will be difficult.

Sometimes you can point at something.

Sometimes you can show a picture.

Sometimes the other person may use a translation app.

You don’t need to have a full conversation.

You just need to find a way to understand each other.

A Translation App Can Help a Lot

I recommend having a translation app on your phone before you come to Korea.

Papago is one option that many travelers recommend for Korean. Some travelers on travel communities such as Reddit say they use Papago when they need help communicating in Korea.

Google Translate is another useful option, so you don’t have to use only one app.

You can type what you want to say, show the translation to someone, or use your phone’s camera to understand written Korean.

If you use an Android phone, Google Lens can also be useful for translating signs, menus, and other Korean writing.

You don’t have to use a translation app all the time.

But when you get stuck, it can make things much easier.

So my advice is simple:

Download a translation app before your trip, not after you arrive in Korea.

You Should Prepare a Map App Too

There is one thing I recommend preparing carefully: your map app.

You can travel in Korea without speaking Korean.

But finding places can be more difficult if you only depend on Google Maps.

Google Maps does not work in Korea in exactly the same way it does in many other countries.

For traveling around Korea, I recommend having Naver Map ready before your trip.

You don’t need to learn everything about the app before you arrive.

Just make sure you have it installed and ready to use.

This can save you a lot of time when you are trying to find your hotel, a restaurant, a subway station, or the right entrance to a place.

I learned this from my own travels too.

When I travel abroad, I sometimes find it difficult to prepare offline maps and understand how local map apps work.

So I know how stressful it can feel when you are standing somewhere with your luggage and are not sure which way to go.

That’s why I recommend preparing your map app before your trip.

Learning to Read Hangul Can Help More Than You Think

You don’t need to learn Korean grammar before visiting Korea.

You don’t even need to speak Korean well.

But if you have time before your trip, I recommend learning how to read Hangul, the Korean alphabet.

It may look difficult at first.

But Hangul is actually quite easy to learn compared with learning the whole Korean language.

Even if you cannot understand the meaning, being able to recognize Korean letters can help you.

You may be able to recognize:

• Subway station names
• Restaurant names
• Street signs
• Store names
• Place names
• Bus stops

This can be especially useful when several signs look similar.

You don’t need to become fluent.

Just learning how Hangul looks can make your trip a little easier.

Seoul Is Easier Than You May Expect

If your first trip is mainly in Seoul, you will probably find it easier to travel than you expect.

Seoul has a large subway system, many signs, lots of convenience stores, and many places used to international visitors.

Popular tourist areas are also easier for foreign travelers.

However, Korea is not only Seoul.

If you travel to smaller cities or more local areas, you may find fewer English signs and fewer people who speak English.

This does not mean you cannot travel there.

It just means that a translation app and a map app become even more useful.

What If You Don’t Understand Someone?

This will probably happen at least once.

Maybe someone speaks Korean to you.

Maybe you don’t understand the menu.

Maybe you are not sure where to go.

Don’t panic.

You can simply use your phone.

You can type what you want to say and show it to the other person.

You can also use a translation app while talking.

Some travelers say that local people also use translation apps when communication is difficult.

You don’t need to feel embarrassed about using your phone.

It is simply another way to communicate.

Is It Rude Not to Speak Korean in Korea?

No.

You are visiting Korea as a traveler, so no one expects you to speak Korean fluently.

Of course, learning a few simple Korean words and using them politely is always appreciated.

But you don’t need to feel guilty if you cannot speak Korean.

Most communication problems can be solved with a little patience, gestures, pictures, or a translation app.

So don’t let the fear of not speaking Korean stop you from visiting Korea.

Do You Need to Learn Korean Before Your Trip?

No.

If you have time, learning a few simple words is always helpful.

No — 아니요

You don’t need to memorize hundreds of words.

Even knowing a few simple expressions can make everyday situations more comfortable.

And if you can learn to read Hangul, even better.

What About Outside Seoul?

This is something I would keep in mind.

Seoul is probably one of the easiest places in Korea for a first-time foreign visitor.

If you visit Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju, Jeonju, or smaller towns, you may find fewer English signs or English-speaking staff.

But you can still travel.

You may simply need to prepare a little more.

Save your hotel address.

Save important places on your map.

Keep your translation app ready.

And take screenshots of important information when you can.

These small preparations can make a big difference.

So, Can You Travel to Korea Without Speaking Korean?

Absolutely.

You do not need to speak Korean to have a great trip to Korea.

But I would not recommend coming completely unprepared.

Before your trip, I would do these four things:

1. Download a Korean translation app such as Papago.
2. Prepare a map app such as Naver Map.
3. Learn a few simple Korean expressions.
4. If you have time, learn how to read Hangul.

You may still have a few moments when you think,

“Wait… what am I supposed to do now?”

That’s normal.

Don’t worry.

Take out your phone, check your map or translation app, and try again.
